Lead Data Scientist

Company information

Muir AI is an early-stage startup building a talented team passionate about solving the world’s biggest problem: climate change. Our aim is to make an impact at the gigaton scale – truly changing the course of the world’s climate.

To do this, we’re developing the intelligence engine for carbon and emissions. Using state-of-the-art AI and ML, we’re fusing data from numerous sources to bring an unprecedented capability to analyze and predict the planet’s carbon emissions. We work directly with companies to accurately measure and track emissions in their supply chains, then identify and analyze abatement opportunities. By working with Muir AI, companies are enabled to take actionable, real steps to confidently reach their net-zero goals.

We’re seeking people who bring an innovative and agile approach to their work, love tackling complex challenges head-on, and are ready to make a real difference for our world.

Role description

As Lead Data Scientist, you will lead the implementation of cutting-edge machine learning, AI, and mathematical techniques that analyze and predict carbon emissions from human activity; the underpinning of Muir’s products. Further, you will work directly with the CTO to build a team of data scientists and machine learning engineers. The role includes developing data pipelines and strategies, designing and implementing models, justifying results, and deployment across the company’s products. Beyond these key responsibilities, you will also be influential in shaping the norms and culture of the engineering team and company writ large.

  • Lead development of world-class data analysis products that provide unprecedented insight into nature’s current and future carbon stocks.
  • Build the architecture for data management, modeling, and deployment.
  • Implement state-of-the-art machine learning methods that fuse data from various disparate sources into clear outputs.
  • Collaborate with data and software engineers to deploy models across Muir's products.
  • Deeply understand the needs of medium to large enterprise customers and tailor solutions to meet and exceed these needs.
  • As the first engineering hire, be able to wear many hats, help develop across the data and product lifecycle, and play a role in maturing and instilling Muir’s culture.

  • Proven experience building and deploying data analysis / machine learning models for large, complex tasks.
  • Exposure to building and working with fused sensor datasets, e.g. in autonomous systems, remote sensing, geospatial data, or similar.
  • Knowledge of data management and visualization techniques.
  • Strong statistical analysis and predictive modeling skills. Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Flexibility and a level of comfort with early-stage ambiguity.
  • Bias for action and ability to iterate are critical.
  • BS in computer science, data science, mathematics, or similar field; MS preferred but not required.
  • Based in, or willingness to relocate to the Seattle area.

Pay transparency

  • Muir believes that pay transparency is an important aspect of a fair hiring process. As such, we have included the following range which a candidate’s offered salary for this role will fall within. The range has been determined from market averages from similar positions at companies of similar sizes, stages and geographies. Final salary compensation within this band will be determined by the skills and experience of the candidate.
  • Base salary range: $150,000 - $200,000
  • In addition to base salary, Muir provides equity in the company as compensation. As we grow and have success, we want that success to be shared with our employees who help build our company. Defining an equity offer upfront is tricky, so we will share exact percentage details with candidates who advance to later stages of the interview process.
